 RETROGRADE MERCURY AND INTERPRETATIONS

by Patricia M. Hanus

Retrograde Mercury only happens about 3 to 4 times a year and when these cycles occur it is well worth noting. It is easier to swim with the current rather than against it. By being prepared, we have less problems, mishaps and frustration, in other words, we won’t have to do things over, twice or three times, if we learn to take the time to do things right the first time.

The word “retrograde” in astrology is used to describe a planet, as viewed from Earth, when it appears to stop and move backwards in our solar system. The planets never really stop to move backward, rather they continually move in an ecliptic forward motion. This phenomenon is actually a visual illusion. Retrograde motion is explained heliocentrically. Any time the Earth and one of the outer planets are on the same side of the Sun (heliocentrically) and the Earth overtakes that outer planet then it appears to us on Earth as though that planet is moving backward in the zodiac. Most of the time the planets are moving eastward in what is called direct motion, but at intervals they appear to stop and then move backward (westward) in what is called “retrograde motion.” The Earth, Sun and Moon never go retrograde.

The outer planets, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto turn retrograde as the Earth moves between them and the Sun. The inner planets, Mercury and Venus, turn retrograde when they are closest to the Earth and they move between Earth and the Sun. Mercury moves retrograde (decreases in longitude) in its motion about three to four times each year, for three or four weeks or approximately 24 days.  It is at a stationary position for about one to two days. The outer planets can remain retrograde 4-5 months each year.

When a planet is retrograde it will have this symbol behind it, Rx.  Mercury, the Messenger of the Gods, is one of the most important planets to pay attention to when it turns retrograde, because Mercury in astrology rules our thinking and all forms of communication, telephones, computers, vehicles, mail, transportation of all sorts including air, local and long distance travel. Life feels like it goes into slow motion, more delays and unexpected mishaps take place, things go haywire for some unexplained reason.

During a retrograde Mercury cycle you can expect delays, things to go wrong, things to take a different direction or get all fouled up or confused.  You must have “patience” in a retrograde Mercury cycle. Get up a little earlier for work in order to make allowances for any unexpected delays you may encounter. This is a time when things break down, like busses, trains, cars, planes, or when computers and phones stop working, when mail is lost or found and messages/notices get all screwed up. You are ahead of the game if you know when Mercury goes retrograde, because you can be prepared to slow down, double check your steps, make sure you thoroughly understand any messages or directions and double check to make sure you wrote out bills correctly and got them mailed in plenty of time to meet the deadlines.

During Mercury retrograde it is best not to make major decisions, sign important contracts or agreements, make a serious long-term commitment or buy a car or house or large ticket item. It won’t hurt to wait a few weeks when Mercury retrograde is over or if you are finishing, I said finishing up old business.

If you want to know where all the major transits are in your natal chart wheel go to this site's menu and click on Astrology Services, Charts and Reports( or click here) and purchase a natal wheel. The natal wheel only gives you the planets in symbols only, but will not interpret them. After payment is received you will be e-mailed your natal wheel only (or click here).
